The Lot-et-Garonne is the leading producer of kiwis, hazelnuts and strawberries. But it is mainly horticulture that dominates these vast areas. These trees are used by the wood industry to make crates. The wetlands are often occupied by crops that require a lot of irrigation: maize and poplars. The plains are very important for the local economy : they represent more than 100,000 hectares, mainly around the Garonne and the Lot. The Gavaudun valley, east of Monflanquin, is classified as a Natura 2000 site. Several castles were built in this region: Biron to the south of the Dordogne, Gavaudun in the village of the same name and Bonaguil to the east of Fumel, on the border with the Lot. The Lot-et-Garonne and its surroundings also attracted people in the Middle Ages. To find out more about the link between the region and prehistory, visit the Musée de Préhistoire in Sauveterre-la-Lémance ! This region, thanks to the forest, the river and the relief, was of particular interest to the first men: caves have been found there, as well as numerous microliths (very small objects made of hard rock) which would have been used as armatures for arrows. To the east, around and to the north of Fumel, forest areas have been preserved and have been relatively protected from deforestation: the north-east of the department is called "le Pays au Bois", and this goes as far as the south of the Dordogne. The few hills in the landscape (called pech) have seen the foundation of towns and villages, such as Castillonnès, Cancon and Monflanquin. In general, there is little difference in altitude. There are beautiful views on large cereal fields and meadows. The relief of the Lot-et-Garonne is considered to be fairly gentle: the northern part consists mainly of rolling limestone hills. There are many neighbouring departments: Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne, Gers, Landes, Gironde and Dordogne. It was named after the two major rivers that flow through it: the Lot and the Garonne.

The Lot-et-Garonne is a French department in the south-west of France, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its topography, its hilly landscapes and the gentle way of life that reigns there, have given it the name "Little Tuscany" by the writer Stendhal and its leading position as a producer of certain fresh fruit and vegetables have led to it being called "the orchard of France". It is located at the crossroads of the Périgord, Bordeaux, the Quercy, the Gascony and les Landes: this is what defines the identity of the Lot-et-Garonne! Zed is a modern, wood paneled two story space that reminds me of an ultra hip, over priced condo with 200 foot ceilings.Lot-et-Garonne has all the characteristic landscapes of the South-West: small villages, bastides, rolling plains, colourful markets, forests, etc. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the food at Zed 451 is gorgeous but so is the restaurant itself. The sinful thing about it all is that this all you can eat brunch is soooo economically priced at $24.99! Our server was super sweet and very accommodating and attentive. I could go on and on about the bacon, but I also enjoyed the tangy Buttermilk Herb Bottom Sirloin, the rich Duck Confit hash Brown potatoes and the ginormous Cinnamon Rolls!!! The bacon is crispy, crunchy, salty, sweet with a kick! Yum, yum, yum!

A caste iron skillet in placed on the table full of this delicious candy and I almost didn’t share any with my dining companions. What stood out to me at this brunch was the Maple Cajun Bacon! I mean bacon is pretty awesome all on its own, but MAPLE CAJUN BACON?! Come on now! This isn’t just any bacon, it is think cut bacon that is dusted with Zed’s own Maple Cajun seasoning and then cooked to perfection. What’s on the menu: Buffalo Chicken & Waffles, Panettone French Toast, Poached Egg with Corned Beef Hash, Buttermilk Herb Bottom Sirloin, Maple Bourbon Glazed Ham, Maple Cajun Bacon, Roasted Turkey Breast, Crab Cake Benedict, Tomato Basil Fritata, Duck Confit Hash Browns and Citrus Dusted Atlantic Salmon, massively huge cinnamon rolls and fresh fruit. The unique experience that I would like to highlight is their brunch experience that I have enjoyed twice.

I am not a sommelier just yet, but I have not sent a glass back yet. They offer an awesome gourmet salad bar with an assortment of crusty breads, cheeses, sliced meats and salads. The unique feature of Zed 451 is that they serve entrees similarly the way meat is served at Brazilian steakhouses. In the month of January alone, I have been there 3 times.

I’ve even proclaimed that it is my favorite restaurant. Ok I must admit, I have been to Zed 451 several times over the last 3 years.
